K7 Bot Removal Tool
Identifies and Removes Malicious Bots from your Desktops and Laptops.
Developed in association with Cyber Swachhta Kendra under the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY)
The K7 Bot Removal Tool
The K7 Bot Removal Tool scans and removes malicious bots and prevalent ransomware variants from your computer. This is a standalone tool that can work alongside any antivirus program installed on your device. Note, this tool only targets bots and ransomware and does not defend your computer against other cyber threats. So K7 Computing recommends using a robust and certified antivirus solution that is frequently updated for comprehensive cyber safety.
What is a bot?
In general, a bot (short for robot) is a software program that performs automated, repetitive tasks without constant human intervention.
In cybersecurity parlance, individual systems that are infected by malware and controlled remotely by the attacker(s) are called a bots.
What is a botnet?
A botnet is a network of computers infected by malware. All the systems that are part of a botnet will be collectively under the control of attacker(s), who are also known as bot-master(s).
The size of a botnet can vary anywhere between hundreds to even millions of individual bots that allow the remote attacker(s) to carry out their malicious activities.
What is a Command and Control server?
A Command and Control (C&C) server is a remote central computer managed by the remote attacker(s).
Typically, the attacker(s) use the C&C server to send malicious instructions to the individual bots under their control. So basically, a C&C can be considered the headquarters of a compromised botnet.
The type of instructions that a C&C can send include: stealing and exfiltrating data, updating the existing malware or downloading new ones and lateral movement of the malware within the network.
What is a ransomware?
Ransomware is type of malware that holds the information on an infected system to ransom by encrypting the user data, thus making them unusable.
The victims of ransomware are then provided with information on how to pay the ransom to the threat actors within a specified time period in order to regain access to their data.
Note, paying the ransom is NOT recommended as: a) there is no guarantee that the user will regain access to their data, and b) paying the ransom encourages the threat actors.
How can users protect themselves from such attacks?
- Install a robust security solution, like K7 Total Security, and ensure it is up-to-date and has all security features enabled at all times
- Keep your OS and all installed software patched with the latest updates
- Do not install any software or open attachments from unknown sources
- Have a strong password policy:
Please take a backup of the data on your computer before running the K7 Bot Removal Tool.
