What is a Botnet?
The term Botnet is comprised of the words "Robot" and "Network". A Botnet is a group of Internet connected devices that are affected by malware and connected in a coordinated manner to perform a malicious task. The affected device is called a "Bot" and is controlled by the hackers. Botnets are used to send spam, steal data, gain unauthorized access, and carry out Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.
What is the impact of Botnet infection?
The hackers constantly look out for ways to infect maximum number of devices which allows them to create a strong 'Bot Network' or 'Zombie Network'. With the Trojan virus, hackers breach the device security and implement command and control software allowing them to perform malicious activities. Following are the types of botnet attacks:- DDoS attacks that takes down a machine/network resource temporarily or indefinitely
- Web application attack that allows to steal valuable information
- Credential stuffing attack that allows unauthorized access to user accounts
- Access to a user's device and its Internet connection
These Botnet networks are also made available for sale/rent by original owners on dark web leading to more cybercriminal activities around the world.
